Hypocalcemia: a major challenge around calving
Nutritional purpose: reduction in the risk of milk fever and subclinical hypocalcemia
Hypocalcemia is one of the key metabolic challenges faced by dairy cows around calving. While clinical hypocalcemia can result in milk fever, subclinical hypocalcemia may occur without obvious signs.
Persistent hypocalcemia is associated with an increased occurrence of health disorders during the peripartum period, including retained placenta, metritis, left displaced abomasum (LDA) and ketosis. It can also affect subsequent milk production and reproductive performance.
Managing calcium metabolism before calving is therefore an important part of preparing dairy cows for the start of lactation.
Negative DCAD: preparing calcium metabolism before calving
One nutritional strategy used to reduce the risk of hypocalcemia is to lower the Dietary Cation-Anion Difference (DCAD) of the prepartum diet.
A negative DCAD strategy helps prepare the cow’s calcium metabolism for the sharp increase in calcium demand at the onset of lactation. The VELANION brochure also reports that studies on negative DCAD diets have shown benefits for post-calving dry matter intake, milk yield, health and fertility.
VELANION: an effective and palatable anionic solution
The use of anionic salts can be limited by their palatability. VELANION contains partially encapsulated anionic salts, designed to achieve a negative DCAD without negatively affecting feed intake.
Its concentrated formula means that it can be incorporated at a relatively low inclusion rate into the prepartum ration.
VELANION provides a combination of magnesium sulfate, calcium chloride, calcium sulfate and ammonium chloride, with the anionic salts being partly encapsulated.

Recommendations for use
VELANION is used in ruminants in preparation for parturition during 21 days before calving.
